I started dancing at the age of 8 at the Royston Ballroom in Penge. I was in the all girls team from the age of about 12.

I was in the team that won the British Championship at Blackpool. I started off dancing as a girl and my partner was Cindy Blunden and in the last year or so I danced as a Boy and my partner was Wendy Thomas.

During my time in the team we competed most weekends at places like Bury St Edmunds, St Ives and Horsham. Most importantly in the British championships at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool each April.

We had wonderful fun all travelling together on the coach and had a great time at our fund raising events and family dances. All of us one big happy family.

We  also appeared on Blue Peter twice !

I joined the adult team at 16 and was so pleased that I could cut my hair off as they wore wigs ! Soon changed my mind on that one. Again I competed all over the place with the team including the World Championships in Germany and team match in Holland.

We made 2 television adverts, appeared on This is Your life and the Carl Allen Awards.

I met my husband Nick at Peggy’s and I left in 1981 to start nursing, but continued my private lessons with Steve Kemsley until Son No.1 Arrived ( Sam ).

Then I made the big mistake of stopping dancing ,But Nick and I started again last year and love it !

We moved to Mid Wales in 2000 and my Dad Bill Shanks lived with us until he passed away in 2016.

We have 2 grown up sons Sam (28) and Tom (20).

My dancing friends have remained in my life and still mean the world to me.

Lynne Shanks ( Now Tolhurst )

I also danced in competitions with Kim Yardley

Whilst in the team I helped to teach children and adults at the Fairfield Halls and at the Spencer and Hearne Dance Centre. I loved taking the children in  for their medal tests

I achieved all the exams possible as both a Junior and an Adult including 2 Alex Moore Awards.
